I know what it is to wrestle with pain & confusion so deeply entrenched in the heart that it is hidden from conscious awareness.
The effects of this kind of deep & hidden suffering and unresolved trauma touch not only the moments of every day life but each and every relationship as well.
What seems to satisfy the appetites of ‘normal’ people doesn't ever quite ‘hit the spot’…. It's like love can't penetrate.
As if a glass pane utterly prevents all smelling, feeling, tasting & being in life itself.
Here, but not quite here.
The thing is though, it doesn't actually take severe or complex trauma to cause a soul to shatter – or a heart to break – in such life impacting ways.
We live in a fallen world where sin is so interwoven into our very being – so natural – we often fail to recognize the depths of harm we cause one another – just by being.
Mothers who are not able to attune to their own hearts struggle to attune to the hearts of their children.
Emotional needs go unmet for the duration of childhood for many human beings.
All this pain, lack & confusion is fertile ground for a person to be tempted to believe lies about life, love & even God Himself.
It's the kind of place where a heart “wishes it was never born in the first place.”
Death would seem a sort of relief for such a heavy laden soul.
The thing is though – this is exactly the kind of heavy laden Jesus is referring to in Matthew 11:28
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
You cannot be in an honest & surrendered relationship with Jesus if you continue to ignore/pretend the deepest places of pain, numbness & suffering in your heart are not there.
You know, the places where you struggle in your faith even though most people in your life wouldn't have a clue?
Things like self-hatred, unconfessed doubt, fear, anger or guilt are all things that literally deafen your ears to His voice & harden your heart to His comfort.

In my recent blog series on Self-Hatred – Hidden Sin, we have explored the reality of the bondage that self-hatred actually is. I have explained exactly how it takes root in the heart – as early as in utero – and have shown you just how significant a role developmental trauma takes in the formation of this exact form of rebellion. I have been a Believer in Christ my whole life and yet have never had so many revelations as I have while going through her course. There were things I have always wondered about, and even saw Scriptural evidence for, but never heard taught in any church setting.
This course is largely based around the topic of bitter roots and how they have the power to influence every facet of your life if you don't deal with them (with the help of the Holy Spirit of course). This is something that is alluded to in Hebrews 12:15. I had always wondered: what exactly is a bitter root and how do I ‘see to it’ that they don't spring up to cause trouble in my life? Nicole Hope
As a survivor of severe abuse throughout her childhood, Nicole knows what it is to wrestle with darkness. She knows what it is like to wish death would swallow her whole.
She has personally faced mountains of grief and fragments of her own shattered heart & soul.
She has done the work of allowing Jesus to penetrate and touch the most wounded parts of her heart so that she is a living, breathing example of the power of His resurrection.
She firmly believes that what Jesus did on the cross for humanity is so perfect and complete, that there is nothing we could add to or take away from what is already accomplished.
